Dr Gareth Thomas PhD MRSB is a strategic leader operating at the intersection of science, policy, and business, with a mission to drive systemic impact for nature and society. He is Head of Research Innovation at the Natural History Museum (NHM), where he co-leads the institution’s innovation function.

Gareth’s leadership on the commercial strategy for the Biodiversity Intactness Index (BII) has transformed it from an academic tool into a trusted data asset used by financial institutions, corporates, and policymakers to assess and manage biodiversity risk. He works across NHM’s matrix of departments - including science, policy, development, and governance - and advises the Executive Board on strategy, risk, and innovation.

Beyond NHM, Gareth is a Board Trustee at Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s largest conservation charities, where he provides strategic oversight on mission delivery, science leadership, and financial resilience. He also serves as a Knowledge Partner to the International Advisory Panel on Biodiversity Credits and sits on the sIndic Corporate Reporting Standards Expert Group, advising on biodiversity integration across frameworks including GRI, ESRS, and TNFD.

A recognised thought leader in sustainability finance and nature strategy, Gareth has spoken at Bloomberg, Goldman Sachs, the World Biodiversity Forum, COP events, and Climate Weeks. His media appearances include The Guardian, ESG Investor, and documentaries. He is known for navigating politically sensitive issues, forging strategic alliances, and leading institutional transformation.
